By RICK YENCER MUNCIE The lack of parking is the latest complaint at Gillespie Tower Apartments, the near-downtown complex for senior citizens. "We want more parking," said Ramona Crabtree, a Gillespie resident who uses an oxygen tank and tubes to breathe. Several Gillespie residents told the Muncie Housing Au-1 thority board of commissioners Tuesday that the 37 parking spaces for the 98 apartments were no longer enough. Gillespie, which opened in 1983, is built on the site of the former Jefferson Elementary School at Jackson and Gharkey streets. Crabtree said she was afraid to park on nearby streets because the city towed vehicles left sitting after 5 days.

Irene Michael, who heads the Gillespie Tenants Council, acknowledged parking had become a problem in recent years as more residents drove. The lack of spaces is also complicated by some residents having more than one car. residents parking Crabtree wanted clarification from the board on whether action had been taken to limit the number of vehicles. Board Chairman Jerome Williams said no such action had been taken, and he instructed board members Mike Privett and Lillian Dunn to look into the problem and return with a solution. "I don't know what to do," said Laura Keihn, Gillespie manager.

There's no surrounding property to buy the parking, and some residents, who require wheelchairs or scooters, need close parking. Only a few residents have disabled parking permits, according to MHA officials. Jackson St. 32 32 Mound Gillespie Adams St. Tower Main St.
